Marsh Lane Fields 1949

Marsh Lane Fields 1949

In 1949 Leyton Council decided to redevelop Marsh Lane Fields as sports grounds with a stadium for the nearby Leyton Wingate football club. The Town Clerk advised that “none of these developments could … be contemplated because the land is Lammas Land. … The only way the land could be used in the manner the Committee had in mind was by sanction of Parliament.” The Council decided to apply for parliamentary sanction and in 1950 sought a relaxation of the Lammas Rights contract, but local people opposed them and petitioned the King. The Council then dropped its scheme.
