'The Friends' was a noted fishing spot on a bend in the river, long since straightened. The fishery was associated with the Horse and Groom public house near Lea Bridge and was noted for an abundance salmon, trout, eels, pike and carp.
Some maps name this No Mans Friend.
The new bridge was designed by engineers Whitby & Bird working with the Art of Change, with funding from the Government Office for London, London Borough of Hackney, Lea Valley Regional Park, Groundwork Hackney and others.
