Pritchard was a contractor and specialist tunneling contractor with his partner Hoof. He constructed the Maida Hill and Islington tunnels on the Regents Canal.
He also constructed the Tames and Medway Strood Tunnel, near Rochester. Thomas Telford described this as ‘A Tunnel more perfect than any other that was hitherto constructed’.
Pritchard was arguably the first specialist civil engineering contractor with a high reputation in the 1820s for his tunneling work.
